Chateaubriand scientific pre- and post-doctorate fellowships

Chateaubriand scientific pre- and post-doctorate fellowships

The Chateaubriand fellowships between France and Israel have existed since 1988. Young Israeli scientists, who are currently working towards a Ph.D., or who have completed their Ph.D., may qualify for a Fellowship from the French Government to conduct research in France.
French-Israeli scientists may not apply to this program. Any field of research is relevant, other than Humanities or Social Sciences.

The research will be performed at a French University, a School of Engineering or a Public Laboratory. Before applying for a fellowship, the candidates must contact the host institution to secure a position.

These scholarships are available for a period of 12 months (not renewable), with a monthly stipend of 1,704 Euros (Ph.D. student) or 2,055 Euros (Post-Doctorate) (2006 rates). Health insurance and a return airline ticket to Israel are also provided. The EGIDE (French Center for Welcome and International Exchanges) will be in charge of these aspects.

The monthly allowance is payable in France and is not taxable. Grant recipients benefit, inter alia, from the same social benefits available to French students (Social Security, access to university restaurants, lodgings on campus, etc). Expenses related to possible travel within France, required for properly carrying out the work intended, may be reimbursed, subject to the prior agreement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On account of the benefits generally offered by the receiving institutions for such training or study courses, it is clearly stipulated that no subsidy shall be provided for whatsoever reason (attendance fees, charges for laboratory use, help with publication, etc).

Lastly, the return journey is paid for, subject to the candidate supplying – in advance – a report to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding his/her stay in France: Scientific significance, probable future developments, comments on the reception/hospitality, etc. This document should be sent to EGIDE (the French Center for Welcome and International Exchanges), the body that looks after the reception in France, help with the stay, administration of “Chateaubriand” grant recipients, as well as requests for transportation home.
